A world exclusive:

the first wristwatch incorporating an annual calendar and a large date display, boasting a 120-hour power reserve.

The calendar is the third complication to be integrated into the automatic Octa caliber. It is considered the first automatic movement to ensure a minimum five-day power reserve, for highly precise timekeeping, even when the watch is not being worn! The unique feature of each Octa complication is the use of an identical mainplate for all models in the collection.

François-Paul Journe achieved the feat of integrating a significant complication—a retrograde annual calendar—while maintaining the mechanism’s dimensions of 30 mm in diameter and 5.7 mm in thickness.

The calendar, which displays the day and month through two apertures, advances instantly and automatically adjusts for months with 29, 30, and 31 days. The Octa’s annual calendar automatically advances from month to month. The only manual correction is made at the end of February, three years out of four. In non-leap years, the calendar must be advanced from February 28th to 29th by a simple turn of the crown. The calendar then automatically advances from February 29th to March 1st.

Traditionally built long-power-reserve watches suffer from the fact that their small balance wheel is susceptible to shocks and disturbances.

The compact construction of the Octa movement allows for a large balance wheel (10.1 mm) with the corresponding inertia, guaranteeing high stability. The chronometer balance wheel (without a regulator) is rated at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Each balance wheel is dynamically adjusted on all five axes of the watch! The weights allow the balance wheel to be advanced or retarded by changing its effective radius, without affecting the balance spring.

When wound chronometrically, the Octa runs for 120 hours (excluding the wrist). Its one-meter-long mainspring provides 850 grams of torque; the loss is limited to 25% of amplitude when its power reserve is depleted. The watch will continue to run for approximately 30 hours beyond five days, but will no longer maintain the same chronometric accuracy.
